The wife and I went to the RV Show in Atlantic City this year. It’s a good thing we took her minivan, as Fessick would not have fit in the garage at the convention center.
My plan was to look at as many travel trailers as possible to find out some must have features as well as figure out what we could live without. I didn’t realize that the wife had been doing some online shopping. I was surprised when she pulled out her list and said “I want to check out these three models.”
We did agree on a few things –
- No furniture break down for the four of us to have beds. We agree that needing to kick a sleepy kid (or mommy) out of bed so we can turn the bed into a table is not acceptable
- Bunk house for our two little ones. I wanted two beds. She wanted four so they can bring friends.
- Outdoor kitchen. I wanted a cooktop and a fridge. She wanted to have a sink out there as well.
- Fixed bed (in a separate room) for the two of us. My wife is willing to consider pocket doors, as long as they are made of wood. Pleated partitions are right out.
- My wife had a few additional features she wanted
- Two doors. She wants a separate entrance to the bathroom so kids aren’t tracking dirt into the camper
- Outdoor shower – apparently she’s got a bit of an exhibitionist in her. (Actually, she is afraid big pots won’t fit in the small RV sink. I’m not planning on cooking Thanksgiving dinner in the camper)
- She wants a lot of counter space, which is going to be tough to find in a travel trailer.
- The wife also wants a U-shaped dinette. I’m not sure that the shape matters much at all.
- After walking into so many trailers that they all faded into a beige blur, we learned a few things. And we were left with a few questions.
- Why would anyone have an indoor fireplace in an RV? You can have a fire outside and the fire place takes the place of a cabinet. You can’t possibly have enough storage in one of these.

- You really don’t have to compromise. After walking for too many miles, and looking at far too many travel trailers, we really did find the perfect unit.
- Bunkhouse with four beds
- Queen size bed in the main bedroom
- Outdoor kitchen with all three appliances
- Outdoor shower
- Lots of counter space (possibly more than we have in the house)
- Lots of storage.
We’re planning on buying the trailer at next year’s RV show. When we have possession I’ll do a video walk through. Follow along as I prep our Fessick.
*** Update, four years later and we still haven’t purchased a travel trailer. Life happens. ***
