Front Wiper and Washer

When I bought the truck, the left side washer nozzle didn’t work very well. It sprayed washer fluid, but when stopped, the fluid landed about 4 inches from the bottom of the glass. When moving, the fluid didn’t make it to the glass. Being that this wasn’t keeping the truck off the road, it was a low-priority repair.

After our final snow storm of the spring, the driver’s side wiper was only clearing the top and bottom third of the blade. I thought the blade had torn, so I bought new ones. Fancy, high-tech, bridgeless wipers.

This made things worse

Replacing the wiper arms couldn’t be easier or faster.

The arms are held onto the shaft by a small locking clip. Bend the arm up (like you do when expecting snow) to take the tension off the shaft. Use a screwdriver, small hook, or your fingernail to pull the clip away from the shaft. Pull the wiper arm straight up the shaft.

Two tricks to re-install –

  1. Bend the new shaft at the hinge.
  2. Open the clip before you lower it onto the shaft.
  • The washer nozzles are an entirely different story.
  • The nozzles are mounted to the cowl between the windshield and the hood.
  • It was such a pain to get the cowls off, that I decided to save them for another day (Actually, I gave up and started to button things back up.). Then I dropped one of the screws through the cowl and watched it roll under the wiper motor. Now I was committed – I had to get the cowl off to get the screw back.
  • Once you get the cowls off, it’s easy to replace the nozzles.
  • Pull the hoses off the nozzles.
  • Squeeze the locking tabs.
  • Push the nozzles up through the cowl.
  • Insert new nozzles.
  • Slide the hose onto the end of the nozzles.
  • ******Before you start to button things up, try the washer to make sure everything is spraying properly. Don’t ask. *********

With a bachelors degree in history, I turn wrenches for a living. I’m most at peace when I hear the wind in the trees or the gurgle of a brook. I’m a believer in the Renaissance Man, as epitomized by DaVinci engineer, artist, soldier, statesman. As Heinlein said, “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
