Build that Wall.

Not that wall. That wall is a stupid idea.

The wall I’m talking about is the one that keeps hundreds of pounds of camping equipment from crushing my children.

In my packing post, I described how I load the truck so that the first thing I need to pitch camp is the first thing that comes off the truck.

Those photos were of the Yurt Box I built for my F-150. Prior to the Yurt Box, I had a set of ladder racks in the bed. All the long pieces went on top of the ladder racks. All the small bits were loaded underneath. I needed the long bits first and couldn’t get them off the truck until the area underneath was unloaded.

The end of a trip was worse. We had to strike our campsite up and stack everything near the truck until the Yurt was down.

Bulkhead pieces laid out on driveway

The Yurt box fixed all that. The Yurt rode on the outside of the box. Everything else went inside.

Pulling the parts out of storage

Now that the F-150 is out of my life, I had to come up with an alternative.

Bulkhead pieces on driveway
I have to line them up on the driveway to remember how they fit.

Both kids can fit on the larger section of the second row, so I built a Z-shaped bulkhead. It goes from the left wall behind the second row, forward, and then behind the front passenger seat to the right wall.

Car seats go on this side.

The bulkhead actually gives me more flexibility than the box did. Because the important parts have designated spots, I can start packing the truck whenever I want.

With a bachelors degree in history, I turn wrenches for a living. I’m most at peace when I hear the wind in the trees or the gurgle of a brook. I’m a believer in the Renaissance Man, as epitomized by DaVinci engineer, artist, soldier, statesman. As Heinlein said, “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
