Lots of curse words and money thrown about unexpectedly.
It seems that my wireless router had reached its effective end of life, or at least the end of my fault tolerance.
Whenever my wife and I watched television, the router would go for about five – ten minutes and then require a reboot. This didn’t happen to the kids. It may be because our shows are high def, and theirs are cartoons. It is about six years old and doesn’t support all the latest protocols, so I decided to upgrade.
Given that the new house is larger than the old, I decided to go with a mesh network. This lets me have two (or more) access points, but my devices see them as a single network. If I walk from one end of the house to the other, the network hands me off from one node to the other seemlessly.
*** Network migration pro tip – If you don’t want to log onto every WiFi device in the house to update the WiFi settings, use the same Network Name and Passcode on the new network as you did on the old one. ***
I don’t think I have a lot of devices on the network, but I didn’t feel like logging onto forty devices from a dozen or more manufacturers.
This brought up another case of “while you’re in there”.
My iTunes library is on an external hard drive which was plugged into the router. The routed hosted it as a file server and all the computers on the network could access the music files.
Neither of the two nodes will recognize the hard drive. I suspect that the manufacturer is using a bad USB 3.0 implementation that refuses to recognize a USB 2.0 drive.
Today UPS is scheduled to deliver a NAS and two 6TB drives. This should (assuming I can figure the software out) allow me to back up the laptops every night and host my iTunes library.
There are several other software packages available that I may play with in the future.
