New Door for the Ger

Last year, I noticed that one of the finger joints on the door was failing. I also may have figured out a way to reduce the amount of rain that runs down the door. So this spring I’m replacing the door frame.

New door frame. Kept the old purple door.

The door frame is probably the most stressed part of the entire structure, because the two belly bands are pulling it apart. The corners are secured with 3/8 carriage bolts and corner braces.

Upper belly band. Finger joint & 3/8” bolt in the corner.

The old frame was flat across the top. in order for the door to be able to open, the two door rafters ended at the frame instead of going past the door. (All the other rafters go a few inches past the khana.) When it rains, whatever water falls above the door would just run down the INSIDE of the door and soak the first rug.

I added this arced board over the top of the door to fix the rain ingress issues. Now the rain drips off the roof a few inches beyond the door. And because water always flows down, most of the water actually drips to the sides of the door.

Diagonal braces in each corner keep the door square.

With a bachelors degree in history, I turn wrenches for a living. I’m most at peace when I hear the wind in the trees or the gurgle of a brook. I’m a believer in the Renaissance Man, as epitomized by DaVinci engineer, artist, soldier, statesman. As Heinlein said, “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
