Keeping the ratchet straps from becoming a wretched mess

So when you buy the nice straps they have all kinds of sweet extra features

  • Reusable case
  • Velcro straps
  • Built in soft shackles*
So satisfying…
to pull this out of the tongue box
It came with this bit of Velcro
Which lets you do this

But when you buy the cheaper straps. There’s no Velcro keeper. There’s no plastic tray.

Well I haven’t come up with anything to replicate the tray, but I’ve got a zero dollar idea for the keeper.

Blue tape solves a lot of problems.

Painters tape should keep the straps untangled until I need them next.

*Actually, both sets of straps came with soft shackles. The green ones are on the long strap. The black/red ones are on the ratchet piece. The two times I’ve used them together have convinced me the green straps are right.

The soft shackle can hold the hook while you walk around the trailer and feed the strap into the ratchet. The soft shackle can’t hold the ratchet. And even if it could, you attach the strap on the far side first, then throw the fabric strap over to the other side of your load. There’s never a time when you need the ratchet to stay in place so you can be on the other side of your load. (Unless you’re the ass who throws metal bits over the roof of your car, risking your windows & your friends’ skulls.)

With a bachelors degree in history, I turn wrenches for a living. I’m most at peace when I hear the wind in the trees or the gurgle of a brook. I’m a believer in the Renaissance Man, as epitomized by DaVinci engineer, artist, soldier, statesman. As Heinlein said, “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
