There’s your problem

Well today I made a wee bit of progress before my neck said it was time to stop.

I got the front top covers off

Also, a tip from my Xerox days — after you remove a part put the screw back in the hole. That way you’ll remember which screw goes in which hole and you’ll never lose a screw.

Is it drafty all of a sudden?
Two screws re-installed in the right side frame. One more above and to the left of the “30”

And I think I found out why the carriage doesn’t advance

I feel like this belt should be pulling the carriage left as I type.
It appears to be a cloth ribbon. I might be able to find a reasonable alternative.

Hopefully when I get this apart, I’ll be able to

  1. Verify that this belt / ribbon is the issue.
  2. Figure out a replacement.
  3. Be able to reattach the replacement
  4. And get the proper tension on the spring.

I was planning on getting the front panel off, but now I think I want to get the carriage out so I can see where this belt belongs.

With a bachelors degree in history, I turn wrenches for a living. I’m most at peace when I hear the wind in the trees or the gurgle of a brook. I’m a believer in the Renaissance Man, as epitomized by DaVinci engineer, artist, soldier, statesman. As Heinlein said, “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
