The Death of Fessick

A sad day indeed, but one that I’ve known was coming for a long time. Today, I said goodbye to Fessick.

Farewell, faithful friend.

When the running board broke under my weight. Removing the running boards made it painfully obvious that the rocker panels were totally rusted out.

When the Neutral Safety Switch started getting wonky. To start the car, I need to switch between Park & Neutral until the switch completes the starter circuit.

When the parking pawls stopped engaging reliably. If I’m parking on a grade I have to go in and out of Park until the transmission manages to hold the car in place. Now the parking pawls seem to have failed completely, I’m parked against a pair of wheel chocks.

When the front hubs started whining. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s the hubs or the brakes, but there’s a definite whine from the front end.

Realistically, I could have fixed any of these issues, but when you stack them all together, it just doesn’t make sense.

The Excursion really doesn’t fit into my lifestyle. I live between NYC and Philly, this truck isn’t a good city vehicle.

I don’t do any heavy towing. I don’t cart around seven passengers.

In the six years I’ve owned this truck, only once have I used a feature of this truck that is unique to it. When I built the tiny shed, Fessick lived in the backyard with all my tools and materials.

And now the search begins… {note – the search actually began several months ago.}

First attempt at rust repair.

It’s been bugging me for a while that there is rust visible around my tow hooks, so I decided to try to make my first (of many {Never buy an East Coast truck}) efforts at rust repair.

The panel around the tow hook was black when it left the factory , now it’s rust, with black highlights.

Driver’s side grab handle

The Excursion didn’t have a grab handle on the drivers side. Pulling oneself up bu the steering wheel or door is a sure way to damage the truck over time. I’m usually good about grabbing the pillar, but when it’s rainy, that metal is slippery, and now I’m at risk for hurting myself.

A bit of eBay shopping and I found a pair of pillar covers and handles in the right color, with bolts & bolt covers.

Tow mirrors (part 1)

I replaced the factory paddle mirrors with some eBay special towing mirrors this weekend.

The stock mirrors had power and heat when Fessick left the factory. By the time he came into my life, the heat was completely non-operational. The left mirror moved correctly, but the right only moved left to right. It wouldn’t move up and down.

The replacement mirrors have marker lights and turn signals behind a smoked lens as well as turn signals mounted in the glass. Additionally, I can pull the mirror further away from the truck to increase the view when I’m pulling a trailer

Look at all that space for (viewing) activities!

Rear Hatch

The rear hatch on the Excursion is…. complicated.

Three panels, electric and manual locks, washer, wiper and defroster.

When I bought Fessick, none of the above worked.

The key cylinder was a rusted lump of metal of various alloys. You could put a key in, but it wasn’t turning anything.

The lock actuator didn’t actuate.

The wiper didn’t wipe.

The washer didn’t wash.

The defroster didn’t defrost.

Transmission pointer calibration.

Can it be this easy?

Video instructions

Before and after pointer calibration
A 30 second fix.

Yes it can.

Literally took longer to re-install the fuse panel cover than to adjust the pointer.

Sleeping Platform (pt.1)

Every year, one of my friends hosts a pig roast for the Fourth of July. Cooking the pig is an all night endeavor, so about a half dozen of the guys come over the night before. We take shifts cooking and sleeping. Last year, he had a full house & I volunteered to sleep in Fessick.
