All my connections are going to be wire nutted and protected inside junction boxes.
MC wire.
I’m using the MC wire because I had it laying about. Though in all honesty it’s probably the right thing to be using when it’s strapped to the outside of power tools.
Big ole stop button.
Once again I added a modern paddle switch to an old tool, but this time I went with the gang box version.
Pro tip – this switch doesn’t fit in a regular switch box – it needs a 4” square box, at least 2 1/8” inch deep with a plaster ring.
A normal switch box calls for the device (switch or outlet) to be screwed into the box and then a cover to be screwed into the device. The paddle switch cover & switch are installed with a single pair of screws through the cover and the device.
Plaster ring and switch. Upper screw (visible) goes through cover & switch and threads into the plaster ring. Theres a second screw under the red paddle. Both hot & neutral are cut at the switch
I got a 1/3 hp motor, unfortunately it was longer and thinner than the original 1/4 hp model. When I first installed the motor the belt was too short to reach the pulley set.
I gotta be nuts to think I can just make the motor taller.
Stacking nuts and fender washers under the motor mount made a solid riser.
The levitation modification.
While I’m here changing things up, I figured I should find a way to keep the tool rests in place.
Demolition man had three sea shells, I’ve got three holes. I heard you like resting, so now you’ve got rests for your tool rests, Dawg.
The only thing left to do now is to learn how to use the lathe.
With a bachelors degree in history, I turn wrenches for a living. I’m most at peace when I hear the wind in the trees or the gurgle of a brook. I’m a believer in the Renaissance Man, as epitomized by DaVinci engineer, artist, soldier, statesman. As Heinlein said, “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
